Overview

Faced with the limits of eco-design and low-carbon energies, we explored how to make sports more sustainable by changing the way we access and value equipment. Instead of owning more, users can now rent high-quality gear, keep it as long as they need, and return it when they’re done. By creating products that people enjoy using, maintaining, and sharing, we designed a system where performance, circularity, and everyday freedom go hand in hand.

Brief

This project was carried out in collaboration with the design team at Piks Design Agency for Decathlon as our client. Faced with the urgent need to drastically reduce its carbon footprint, Decathlon was seeking alternatives to their existing economic model. Our challenge was to explore and prototype service-based approaches that would support circularity while enhancing user satisfaction. The objective was clear: create an end-to-end system where product value is extended through rental, customization, repair, and reuse, and where sports equipment becomes a liberating, flexible experience rather than a source of overconsumption.

Proposal

We designed a complete ecosystem called DECATHLON GARAGE: a subscription-based service where users can access high-performance, ultra-durable products tailored for rental, and enjoy sports without the need to own. From rental to repair, from customization workshops to local service networks, everything is built to support circularity and freedom of choice.

Users save money, reduce clutter, and multiply experiences, practicing 6 times more sports in 6 months than under the traditional model. On the planet side, this new model cuts emissions by 60kg CO₂ per user per year. For Decathlon, this system could be 9 to 12 times more profitable than their current business model.

Throughout the project, I contributed to the design strategy, the service storytelling, and the articulation between product, usage, and environmental impact. The goal: shift habits not by constraint, but by designing joy.
